A long time ago, I read “The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire”. The most amazing thing to me was how long the fall took — and how most Romans couldn’t see the decline. These things don’t happen in a decade or two. The roots go a long ways back.

I quit party politics in 1992. It was a dysfunctional culture. Maybe that was my sign that western democracy was failing.

We’ve had more than a few empires go the same slow way: Muslim, Chinese, Spanish, French, British. There’s no historical reason to suggest that the USA is going to continue its dominance of world affairs forever.

I don’t think reform will come from the masses. Nor from the political process itself. It will come from a small minority who (1) recognize that western democracy is falling AND (2) are willing to work to build a new system of democratic governance that gets rid of political parties. I have no trouble finding people who believe in the first criterion, but not the second. I think humanity can re-invent itself, but without the effort of that small minority we are headed for a regression in civilization.

I am in my final days of Medium. I need to go somewhere else.
