A statesman can frame an issue in such a way that even many who disagree can see some rationale for the position. This act tends to subdue the disagreeing voices such that they are willing to give some time to see what happens next. Mr. Trump does not seem to have those talents.

My recollection of Mr. Nixon was that he was a reasonable statesman until that Watergate thing broke out. Then we saw the political facade drop and got more of his true character.

My understanding of history was Mr. Jackson had his base that he appealed to--and didn't give a damn about the rest of the voters. Not a statesman.

So what is your point? Should we do away with statesmanship?
