A very touching piece Umair. Makes one think a lot.

But we need to ask the question of why did we get to this position in the first place, where illegal immigrants want to move to the USA?

Here are two answers:

1. USA is a country that tolerates illegal immigrants because they are a source of cheap labor. Once in USA, illegal immigrants know they can hide for decades with under-the-table work. Such work is much harder to find in Canada.
2. Illegal immigrants are coming into the USA because where they come from is hell. Poverty, unemployment, gangs, drugs are all contribute to drive these people out of their home country. How did these countries get that way? Well maybe American imperialism had something to do with it.

So let’s shed lots of tear for the kids in detention/concentration camps (whatever you want to call it). Let’s yell and scream at the R party for being so cruel to kids. We get our way. Guess what? The real problems are still there.

Western democracy (especially the current American version for the past generation) has proven not to deal with these issues very well. It’s time to consider a different way.
