I always found it strange at how reluctant we are to change borders in any way. Often the historical reasons for borders is not ground in good social engineering. Splitting California into three states made a lot of sense to me, but some judge said that thought could not be put on a plebiscite.

Violent revolutions usually do not produce the results that are best of the people. Border changes often do not produce results that are best for the people.

If the USA really wants to be indivisible--geographically speaking--it will need a new political system.
