I'm going to disagree. My heritage is Eastern Europe (Slovakia and Ukraine). My grandparents left their home countries because there was little opportunity to advance. My roots are with the peasant class.
I grew in a working poor family. But I saw my father excel at farming, and that brought more income into the family. Had my grandparents stayed in the old country, my father would not have had a similar opportunity.
Western democracy has opened up a lot of opportunity for a lot of people. Labor unions are a good example. There is no way the wealthy classes wanted labor unions, but they got formed. Union jobs gave many working poor people a middle class income.
I could give other examples. As much as "my list" seems to diss western democracy, I am still thankful for being born in Canada in 1959. So many other worse times and places . . . .
The purpose of the list is to provide rational why we need to move higher.
In these days, if we don't make moves to go higher, we will likely go lower.
