I’m not too worried about Mr. Trump turning USA into some kind of oligarchy. He is old; he is not very smart; the American people are putting up a lot of resistance, so he cannot run the USA the same way he runs his corporations. To me, American democracy is handling this rogue president quite well from what I can see. All his executive orders can be undone later.
These days, Mr. Trump seems to be more worried about polls that put him behind the D candidates than shutting down CNN or making deals with the army generals.
The D’s won’t die on the hill, even if they lose the presidency. Mr. Trump will be gone in 2024 for sure. And he will leave behind a broken party with no effective leader to replace. The D’s should have free rein for a decade after that.
I think USA should be thankful it is going through the Trump experiment now. The next populist leader (who could come from the left) is likely to be younger, knowledgeable about psychology and sociology, and able to put together an oligarchic transition team. Yes, Americans can be duped and/or cowed, but Mr. Trump is not the one.
