I was one of the first to believe that Mr. Trump had a reasonable chance of winning the 2016 election. I came to that conclusion as he was leading the pack in the Republican primary.
We can blame Mr. Trump, his behind-the-scenes handlers, and/or the MAGA base. But I prefer to blame the dysfunctional system that allowed him to rise to a high position. A more functional system would have kept him away from being a viable contender.
