is the same as
He put the pieces together.
Some phrasal verbs can be split. Other cannot. Why? I could not explain to my students when I was teaching English. Something about transitive and intransitive verbs, but . . . .
So much better to say:
He joined the pieces.
Native English speakers have a natural understanding of phrasal verbs. Learners of English take a long time to master this part of the language.
That gives us native speakers an edge in international communication.
