Another attempted coup is indeed a possibility.

Back in 2016, I predicted that a Trump presidency was also a possibility in the R primaries. Not many were even thinking in that direction; maybe not even Mr. Trump. I think it was mostly a publicity stunt on his part.

But we all knew (or should have known) that he had few democratic tendencies. January 6, 2021 was within the realm of possibilities long before that.

Two authors, much better known than I, predicted in 2017 that Trump would try to take down the American democracy. In their book, they put up parallels between other dictators' paths and Trump's first year in office. Scary.

Perhaps scarier is that the authors wrote a manual on how to transform a democracy to a oligarchy.
