Another Medium contributor said that the Republicans are in it too deep to turn back.

From a political science perspective, the R's have nothing to gain by admitting they screwed up. They will not get any extra votes. But they will lose votes from their base if they make such an admission. Therefore is it political astute to continue in the direction they are continuing in.

As well, the R's can play both sides of the game. If Mr. Trump can somehow turn the USA into a one-party nation, these elected R's will be in a good position to take a high position in this new system. If the USA retains its democracy, they will be in the same position as they are today. Nothing is really lost.

Their behavior is quite understandable to me.
