As this drama is playing out, I am recalling 1984.

In this version of earth, there are only three political entities. They are enemies of each other, and have little wars that don't change boundaries very much. But the wars help keep the plebes agitated against the other nation, and not their own national government.

Maybe today's power brokers are seeing the US, Russia, and China as the 1984 powers.
