At our school, we spend a reasonable amount of time having math students calculate credit card payments. Good math, but the underlying theme is the interest one must pay. The teachers are pretty good at verbally communicating the message — even if the textbook is not so clear.
Unfortunately too many students treat the math lesson as something to get a good mark in math — and move to higher level.
We can put all the education in front of people — and a few do get the right lesson. But until someone is really ready to learn, they won’t.
