Back in our hunter-gatherer days, we were quite suspicious of the other tribes, much more than we are today.
There was a Medium article about the aboriginal tribes in the Amazon. Usually such stories are romanticized as noble cultures. But this article talked about a common intertribal activity: raiding the other tribes and stealing their women.
That was how we did things in the "good old days." We have overcome a lot of our bad human nature (with or without religion). We still have a lot of work to do.
