Based on my understanding of the world, this excerpt does not make any sense.

1) There was no economic gain to continue with colonization of the Moon.

2) The Americans won the space race; not much sense in scoring more touchdowns.

3) There is no point is using the Moon as a jumping point for Mars.

While I can't so easily debunk other excepts, I will assume they are made from the same illogical approach.
