Being suddenly thrust into a big management position is indeed a big challange.

More astute managers of careers know they have to start small. This smallness gives them the position to see and learn from their managers. What did they do right? What did they do wrong? After 5-10 years of watching, they will be more ready to assume their bosses' job.

I wish someone had told me this in my early career. But I probably would not have listened.
