Carey: The states, at any time, can amend the EC processes to distribute EC votes more in line with the wishes voters of the state. Maine and Nebraska have already done that.

Whether this is done or not, Mr. Trump was a viable contender in 2016 and in 2020. He will be a viable contender in 2024 (if still alive). Something is inherently wrong with the American electoral systems if someone like Mr. Trump gets access to legitimate democratic power.

The EC is a moot point.
