Celeb: For sure, we can say that it was not a military coup. But what would have happened if events had gone a little differently that day?

1) Let's say members of Congress were beaten, killed, raped, or hung in the gallows. This would have given Mr. Trump the excuse to call in martial law. Then tanks would have been rolling in the streets.

2) Let's say Congress did not resume sitting that evening to certify the election results. Legally speaking, Mr. Biden was not the President until that vote happened. Without that vote, this would have put the generals in a difficult decision to "defend the constitution," which says Mr. Trump is president and will still be president after January 21. Mr. Trump could have declared martial law and postponed the vote to a time more convenient for him.

From my limited perspective, the coup attempt was not well orchestrated enough to produce conditions Points 1 and/or 2 above. But that is not an excuse to ignore what seems to have been the end result of the insurrection. This is why there should be a big inquiry, especially as to what was going on in the White House. If the White House was behaving in a good way, then they have nothing to fear from such an inquiry. But all the stonewalling suggests there is something to fear.
