Circa 1900, the two most common causes of death were childbirth and food poisoning. We could say both were reduced because we had a well intentioned government, trying to make life better for everyone.

There is no doubt in my mind that should goverment get smaller by getting out of its food inspection services, the processors would cut corners to reduce costs for their customers. Restaurants would become dangerous places to eat.

But because we have these government services, I need not pack a lunch everytime I leave the house for a few hours. In essence, these services have given my a lot of convenience--and more freedom.

The right-wing mentality does not understand this, but they will also be the first to complain when food poisoning happens.
