For about a year, I was a tenant in museum house. They wanted a body in the house to watch for things in exchange for free rent.
The house was of a pioneer nature, maybe 110 years old. There were some modern amenities added, but not all.
I could not believe the extra housework required to keep that house functional. Not exactly free rent.
There were "practical" reasons why women stayed home in the "good old days."
But getting back to your article. I can let housework slide to some extent. But eventually I need to re-order the chaos. But my threshhold to be clean is lower than most people, so they have higher desire to be clean. Which means they end up doing more of the housework.
