Hard to say what is going on the back rooms of the petroleum industry (of the big multinational players). I suspect that they have plans if petroleum consumption increases, stays the same, or retracts. Profits regardless.

I don't see any replacement for asphalt, plastics, or aviation fuel. That will keep the industry going for another 50 years--even if there is a big retraction.
