Hello again Penguin
If I were Pavlov's dog running around the Medium maze trying to figure out what to do to get food, I would probably starve. If there is not much rhyme and reason for what tickles the Medium algorithms and Medium readers, it's hard to see. Other writers have expressed a similar frustration.
My articles about celebrity+controversy seem to do better than the general Dave milleau. But not always. And I don't want to become known as a celebrity basher.
Having said, I have noticed that the more successful writers have developed a formula that resonates with certain readers. The Penguin would be one of them. He takes popular issues and introduces angles to those issues that are usually not addressed by the established pundits. Penguin readers like this approach.
The successful writers more or less stick to their formula. If they deviate too much, they could start losing their loyal audience.
Having said that, I don't think the Penguin is paying his rent with Medium royalties. This means we should be writing mostly for fun. I guess I like my Medium freedom a little too much. But more than a few writers here do not understand that not having a formula is a recipe for a not-so-great readership.
In my opinion, Medium needs to split the royalty between the writer and pub owner in a 80/20 ratio. Then we will see pubs that get really get good at finding a certain kind of audience. As a new pub owner, you might appreciate this sentiment.

David may or may not come around. He could go either way.
Too many adolescents move into adulthood with too much baggage. Something else we have to fix.

I have read a fair bit of 12 rules by Mr. Jordan. It seems to be a good book. Too bad he has so many bad ideas.
