I did a quick search about hair stylist for Alberta:

Apprenticeship requires 1400 hours on-the-job training. Which takes two years, with 10-weeks a year in apprentice school. Wages are $20 per hour.

After that, the journeymen requires 3400 hours of on the job training. Wages are $25 per hour.

This is a little vague to me. But it sounds like overkill.
