I guess I have different experience than you. I've always treated my employers like a commodity. When things look better somewhere, it's time to go. A free market solution in some ways.

The company I worked for between 1981 and 1983 was good to me. It paid well. There was advancement. But it was hard work, and turnover was high. I think the company planned for an average of three years per employee.

The business I started was competing with my former employer. I too knew that I should expert only 2-3 years out of an employee no matter how well I treated them.

I was with my last employer for 15 years. There was never any chance of advancement. They kept me at 32 hours per week so not to pay this part-timer any pension. My supervisors saw me as a warm body filling a chair. But other things made the job OK.

I really don't see many perfect occupations out there. We all have to put up with some crap.

Having said, we really do need better working relationships--and unions are not the answer. I want to spend some time with these people:

But I can't seem to cure my Medium addiction--plus a few other chaotic things in my life.

And I'm a strong believe in a UBI. One important feature of a UBI is that it will force managers to manage a lot better--if the firm wants employees to work there. This will actually have a big positive impact on the economy.
