I had recently had a discussion with another Medium contributor about this matter. I took the side that because the police or military were not involved, this was not an insurrection. Rather, Jan 6 was an attempt to create a constitutional crisis (which almost worked).

When we went to the dictionary definition, then it is clear that Jan 6 was an insurrection.

If there is an advanced definition of "insurrection" in the legal matters of the USA, I'm haven't seen it. Until then, the dictionary definition has to suffice.

But until Mr. Trump is actually convicted in a court of law for inciting an insurrection, I think it is a mistake to make other legal decisions based on the assumption that he did cause an insurrection, even though many of us think he did, including many of his supporters.
