I have a friend who is a free-lance baker on Vancouver Island. He sells his products in farmer's markets.

He often gets questioned: "Is the wheat for your flour locally grown?"

He answers, "No, Saskatchewan is much better for growing wheat."

Vancouver Island does not have enough agricultural land to feed its population. And the island's rainy nature means getting a wheat harvest off is kind of dicey.

Personally, I think an ever increasing fuel tax would create free market forces for more independent local growers to sell locally. But our modern local economies will always need food from outside.

In the meantime, I am eating less meat. And avocados are a healthy treat, not a necessity.
