I have a tendency to use "this" in a not so effective way. Still a habit for first draft stuff. I often replace "that" word with a better noun phrase.

This is good.

The vanilla ice cream is good.

Writers should have a radar for all pronouns and analyze their usage in a sentence.

"That" has another use than "this". It can function as a pronoun or it can function to show a relative clause.
