I have another take. Remember Bruce Springstein's song "Glory Days." It talks about the silliness of middle agers reminiscing about how they were accomplishing great things in their youth and now they were just ordinary. Even though "they" won the football championship or informal popularity contests, all that really means nothing. Yet the success in youth still comforts them.
The US national anthem is about a war that happened more than 200 years ago. It's time to move on.
