I have encountered many "state rights" advocates over the years. They see these boundaries as being drawn by God Himself. They would not allow a county adjacent to another state to join that state, let alone let these counties maybe make a few of their own laws that go beyond parking tickets or fixing potholes.

As we have discussed before, I have an alternative democracy called the TDG. I see this as a unitary state, as authorty and responsibility of governance change between the various tiers as needed. Some situations, places and times are better managed at the local level. Some at a higher level. There is no idealogy to set these responisilibities. The highest tier will make changes for the betterment of the people.

As well, I can see various poltical units changing their "mother unit" if it is more practical for doing so. For example, in rural NW Ontario, the natural economic and social flows are towards Winnipeg. NW Ontario should belang to Manitoba.
