I have my doubts. The "billionaires" did not distance themselves from Mr. Trump at the beginning. They will park their allegiance and influence to the candidate where they can make more money.

If they can see themselves making money under an oligarchy that suppreses many rights for average people, they will prefer that oligarchy to any democracy.

As an example, both Russia and China have a thriving class of billionaries.

In "How Democracies Die", the authors cite the 1970 change to the American primary system for the two parties. Previously both D's and R's had the back room boys being quite influential in who becomes president. They would have never approved of someone like Mr. Trump. But with the open primaries, the masses had the most say. Then someone like Mr. Trump came along.

The USA is still ripe for another populist autocrat.
