I have often used Asimov's vision that democracy has a shelf life of two to three centuries before it falls in on itself. We just might be seeing that Asimov prophecy today.
Why can't SF writers write about a more GAIA-like civilization? Probably because that kind of civilization would be to too peaceful to sell books. Not too much controversy, just people getting along. Asimov would not have gone very far with FOUNDATION if the story started on Gaia.
I have imagined a more collaborative future with a different kind of democracy. I've been on Medium for 30 months and acquired 850 followers. But not many want to read my articles on this matter. But when I write something that is more in line with the usual political conflict, my readership triples.
You have probably run across Umair Haque. Since I've been on Medium, he writes daily articles about his dystopia. Kind of the same shtick each time. However Umair has a series of great essays called Eudonamics, his vision for a better world. But his readers don't want to hear about it. They want his dystopia.
Both Foundation and Dune give us lots of dystopia. Asimov says democracy won't last long.
