I have some financial math training. A decade or two ago, I found a financial math textbook about public financing of civic projects. The math was too much for me, but it was interesting to see the level of analysis that can be applied.

But when the politicians disregard the analysis because it doesn't support their agenda, then the analysis is kind of pointless. Might as well stick a wet finger in the air and see which side dries first.
