I have to agree with most of responders. Self driving vehicles are the future — even if that future is a long ways off. And the transition will be slow — and I’m confident workers in this field or want to be in this field will be able to see the trend and make life decisions with appropriate knowledge.
In the mean time, long distance trucking is a good-paying occupation. People in this field should expect another 10 years at least.
What is likely to happen earlier is reducing waiters at restaurants. Instead of a waiter buzzing around a table, a staff member will hand a tablet to the customers. The customers then touchscreens the menu items; the order is sent wirelessly to the kitchen. The staff member brings the meal out. Yes, restaurants will still need wait staff, but the order-by-tablet should cut the number by half to two-thirds. And this transition will be fairly quick. When it catches on, I can see a 5-year period to nearly total adoption.
We can claim that being a waiter is mostly a short-term occupation for many. But people who need that occupation to get some basic income and work skills will have fewer opportunities.
As far this article using the death of a person in an Uber accident to justify not having a UBI or GBI, the connection is weak.
