Few writers have acknowledged the importance of "opening up the west" in USA's development. Any disgruntled citizen could move west and put his talents and ambition into being a more productive contributor to the economy. The eastern elites got rid of citizen who could become a political agitator.

Unfortunately, there are no more "social relief" valves like this anymore. Most discontented citizens percolate in their home towns. The few who move out find things similar to their home town.

We need more social relief valves. The entertainment industry has too few positions.
