I kind of knew about the change in selecting senators long ago. But I didn’t think it made a great deal of difference.

But about a year ago, I was conversing with a let’s-get-back-to-the-constitution thinker. The better senators had a much different outlook a hundred years ago.

Even prior to 1980, congressmen used to barter their votes. “I really like Bill 101. I see you don’t care about Bill 101. But if you vote for Bill 101, I will vote for your favorite, Bill 201.” I don’t think Congress is horsetrading votes any more. Most votes are partisan based.
