I like to bring up food safety. Without rules and regulations, there would be too many food providers happy to kill many of us off for a quick profit. It is government, not a watchful public punishing the bad operators by not buying from them, that keeps this industry mostly honest.
And economy benefits because many of us are preparing brown-bag lunches--and getting other things done.
But we do need a different way of governing: one that average citizens have confidence in. When we get a new food safety rule, we wonder who is going to profit from that rule.
