In theory, Leninism should have worked. But the trouble is that when such changes happen so abruptly, many ideals behind the revolution get lost. After his victory, Lenin had to deal with elements of the old order still holding on to some power as well as a split in his own party. He needed to come down hard on dissidents. Otherwise, he would have been a minor footnote in history.
