I played guitar for 15 years. The few times I played publicly, it did not go well: I have a tendency to drift into 5/4 beat with 4/4 music. No one asked me back.

I got a lot out of playing guitar in those years. Great therapy. A much better and cheaper hobby than drinking beer. I’m sure I put my 10,000 hours in, but there is either a total lack of talent or not taking on this skill in my formative years.

But would I have ever called myself a musician? No.

But would I call myself a writer? Once I answered that question in the affirmative. The next question was: “What do you write about?”

I had to think for my writing is all over the map. I responded with: “I write about things no one else wants to read.”

Until I can start finding paying customers, I will not call myself a writer. In the meantime, it is a hobby I enjoy.
