I am a first generation Canadian. My father came from Slovakia. My mother was born in Canada, but of Ukrainian parents. I saw how my grandparents never really became Canadian.
Both my father and mother were treated as "bohunks" in their childhood. My father's community was a mixture of Lutheran Danes and Catholic Slovaks. Both groups tried to teach their children to distrust each other. But the new generation decided not to listen. In time, even the older people decided to bury hatchets and became quasi-friendly.
