I see this all the time with my work. People are passengers in the bus called western democracy. They cannot imagine getting on a different bus. They cannot imagine a different kind of democracy, let alone investigating that democracy.

To add to the Luddite analogy, there was a profound lifestyle change with the factory looms. Weavers would work from home, supplementing their agricultural income with their textiles. They chose their own work hours. They played with their children, visited with neighbors, and maybe drank a beer or two at the pubs with friends. The industrial revolution eliminated those life choices. 8+ hours a day at the factory, few breaks.
