I spent two years in Czechslovakia (Brno ond Trnava). The paneloks are indeed ugly on the outside. But get into one of the flats, they were well furnished and could be called a "home." The people decorated the inside very well.

How they managed to get these nice things was a bit of a mystery to me. But there were informal channels of commerce.
