I still think it is plausible that the R's do take over. However, they will be so inept in governance that the communists will look great. And, unlike the communists, the R's will face a hostile opposition that will require suppressing, which will be very difficult for an inept government. I give the R's less than a decade on the oligarchic stage.
The question we should be asking is: "Why did Mr. Trump arise to his high political position in the first place?" The system failed us in not being able to filter out this kind of political player. If it could happen in 2016, it could happen again.
I have a solution for all this. The Trump base would still be allowed to vote, but their obtuse perspectives would not be able to coalesce into a political movement. In fact, everyone will be voting for different reasons than they do today.
