I think the writing was on the wall at the time: the western world was becoming increasingly intolerant of slavery. The Old South would have faced immense international pressure by 1880 to abandon slavery.

I'm not sure the Civil War was worth the sacrifice. But that is historical hindsight. We can only change today and tomorrow.
