I think you need to write an article around this social issue:
I see [internships] as a form of class discrimination, as it’s fundamentally rooted in the need for a family wealthy enough to support you to live and commute in one of the most expensive cities in the world.
Plumbers don’t intern, but they take a lower wage when first starting out. The big difference is that children of the wealthy don’t aspire to be plumbers. Writers is a more socially acceptable occupation.
