I too have wondered whether the landlord industry would try to sop up the UBI payments to the point where the recipients are no better off. This industry will indeed likely try to get that advantage. A lot depends on competitive forces: a UBI could increase demand for rental units.
But no one knows for sure. This is why I advocate for a slow implementation of a UBI, starting about $100 a month. The sociologists and economists can watch to see if that $100 has an adverse effect. If not, the UBI should be increased.
