Writers that quibble on the democracy vs. republic debate seem to want to denigrate the idea that democracy gives the citizens the right to throw out their political leaders.

Unfortunately, a lot popular conservatism cannot be defended by logic these days. Get rid of welfare and welfare people will find jobs. Some will, but more will move into petty crime to make a living. And it's cheaper to give welfare than put them in prison.
