I tried to save the world by becoming an active volunteer in a Canadian political party. Taking on this role allowed me to see a small portion of the immense complexities of politics.

My father belonged to the same political party. He sent the party a few checks a year and showed up on election night for the free beer. But he seldom attended political meetings or organized anything. He thought he knew more about politics than I.

In the short term, Americans would do better to support the Democrats--holding nose if necessary Instead of chirping at the side lines about what the D's should or should not do, I say get out and canvass--and get to see the real America with your own eyes.

Long term, Americans need to build a new democracy.

I got to ride a restored Model A Ford. There's a good reason (or two or three or more) why we aren't using that car anymore. Great car in its day, but . . . .
