I used to get into discussions with left-leaning people about gender equality. A worker on a drilling rig made about $50,000 a year (in those times) and an office clerk made $15,000. To some left-leaners, this was obvious patriarchy at work.

But there's no way to equate these two jobs. If we want new oil wells, that's what we have to pay those workers. They would not be there for $15,000!
