I wanted to highlight this whole essay, but that would defeat the purpose of highlighting. This last statement is most profound.

"Maybe we will finally start to learn something"

Really?

Back in 1982, I realized that we could not continue burning fossil fuels. My solution was to put a hefty tax on energy consumption to discourage use.

In 1986, I joined a Canadian political party as my contribution to effect this and a few other social changes. I left politics in 1992.

But somehow I invented another system of governance that addresses much of the dysfunction I was seeing. I have been promoting that democracy for 27 years.

The election of Donald Trump in 2016 is a sign of how broken our current democracy. While most people are quick to advise us on why and how he should be defeated, I say he should have never been a viable contender.

I don't have a Ph.D. I am not an accomplished person. I am not a celebrity. Nor do I associate with such people. But I seem to the only one who realizes that western democracy--especially the American version--is very broken, is unrepairable, and needs to be replaced.

So when I read this essay, I see lofty goals that we should have started working on 50 years ago. And I see no way of reaching these goals if we insist on being governed by political parties.
