I was at the top of my class in high school. So I too took it for granted that my favorite university would accept me. There was no Plan B for me. I think this was more arrogance rather white privilege, but maybe these are the some.
The plight of your wife getting the proper creds, especially for a profession that really can't harm the public, is indeed ridiculous. To me, this speaks to the inability of our democracies to deal with poorly thought out laws or laws that have became obsolete.
In the USA, it seems (to me) that bad laws stay on the books for 30+ years before politic change can make new laws. In Canada, we are more proactive in this regard, but still there is a lag of five to 10 years after a legislative need is identified.
And too often, the change is base on the whims and ideology of the political party in power or the high-ranking civil servants rather than talking to the people .
We really need a new democracy.
