I was in Bukovina in 2006, visiting relatives. According to my uncle, the city of Chernivitsi had about 10% ethic Russians--and they were not happy with the Ukrainianization happening. They would have preferred Russian rule. But that was half a generation ago.
It was surprising to see the Russians in the Baltics not being in favor of this war.
It is also surprising that the Russians are killing and displacing ethnic Russians, like in Mariupol. Not a good way to make friends with the people who have been agitating. It's not hard to understand if these Russians are turning against the idea of Russian control. But this is a war that is not making much sense except to those who have initiated it. Maybe this "Ukrainian identity" is what fears the initiators.
